When Your Black Cracks: 5 Ways to keep your face feeling moisturized and looking fresh

I’m sure most of you have heard the phrase “Black don’t crack!” and that people of color are known to age in a way that is easy on the eyes. BUT you have to take care of yourself because aging beautifully doesn’t just happen.

I’ve been really investing in my skin care regimen and in the process, I’ve learned five ways to make sure my face and skin stay looking young and healthy.

1. Simply use a moisturizer!

One of the first lines of defense against aging skin is moisturizing. Keeping your skin well-moisturized can help hold wrinkles at bay and keep that youthful glow around as long as possible.┬áSome might think this is a “duh” moment, but I never realized how many people were washing their faces and moving right along with their day without using some kind of moisturizer. NO NO NO!20140415-234105.jpg

The same way you need to grab your lotions, creams and butters after a shower in order to chase the ash and grey away, you should be moisturizing your face after you wash it. I recommend using a facial moisturizer with SPF because in addition to the health reasons (fighting off harmful sun rays), moisturizers with SPF help resist the aging effects of overexposure to the sun. My current fav is Ambi’s Even & Clear Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30.

2. Facial steams.

A few months ago, I was sent Maijan’s Healing Herbal Facial Steams for both dry and oil skin. My skin tends to be more toward the dry side and it was during the wintertime when I especially have issues with dry skin, so I tried the Nourish Facial Steam for dry skin first.

Have you ever been in a sauna? It opens up your pores and allows for some major detox action. Well, facial steams are a mini sauna for your face and are great for giving your skin a boost of moisture, as well as clarifying the pores and removing toxins. Herbal steams like the one I used act as a natural astringent. Even if you have oily skin, many times the skin produces large amounts of oil to compensate for dry feeling skin so facial steams can benefit you too.

3. Oil cleansing.

There has been much talk around oil cleansing and whether it can completely replace the traditional facial regimen most of us use. While I’ve decided that oil cleansing isn’t best for me as far as replacing my usual facial cleanser and moisturizer, I did find it to be a great treat for my skin once a week. My skin feels smoother and my complexion looks clearer and brighter after a good oil cleansing. Many companies have started putting oil cleansers of their own on stores shelves, but a simple oil of your choice (I love almond oil!) will do. Check out my post here for more info on oil cleansing.

4. Exfoliating.

Exfoliating helps get rid of the daily gunk and old, dead skin cells that build up on our skin. Removing all of the dirt and grime of the day is important, but sometimes our facial cleansers miss some of the job and that’s where exfoliating comes in. A good exfoliating scrub or mask can help finish up the job and get those pores nice and clear. Once you get all of the extra stuff out of the way, it’s easier for your moisturizer to get to where you really need it.

5. Facial masks and treatments.

Sometimes your face needs a little moisture boost and one simple way to get it, is with a facial mask. There are also tons of facial masks that target other problem areas like blemishes, acne, oily skin, dry skin, and the list goes on. I’m a fan of the Freeman Feeling Beautiful facial masks because their product line covers a lot of skin needs and you can pick the treatment that best suits you. I also love my Reshma Femme Multani Mitti Clay Mask and how it really evens out my skin and leaves it feeling refreshed.

Bonus ONE: Drink water. Lots of it. The recommended amount is AT LEAST 64 ounces a day. The best way to keep your skin hydrated is from the inside out.
Bonus TWO: Stay as stress-free as possible. Frowning breeds unsightly lines so find the things that make you smile and keep them around as much as possible.

What are some ways you like to keep your skin looking and feeling fresh? Have you tried any of the methods above? Let me know how you keep your black from cracking below!
