Sometimes a girl just needs to get a little bit kinky.

Hair, that is.

I’m Jess. And I love hair. Long. Short. Kinky. Curly. Coiled. Up. Down. Out. I love all of it. Whatever you may be working with, natural hair is just beautiful.

I share my story, my thoughts, my discoveries, my knowledge, my experiences in hopes that others can learn to be confident enough to show their kinky side too. And I hope you all don’t mind letting it all hang out along with me *wink*

So welcome to my natural hair blog, HairGetsKinky.com

I like it kinky. And I hope you do, too.

Hey there. I met your lovely mother at a conference last week and she told me about your site. I’m hopeful that you can help me out! My husband and I are caucasian and just got our first foster child who is biracial (mom is caucasian and father is african-american). I am currently washing her hair once a week with shampoo and then conditioning it (leaving the conditioner in for 5 minutes) then rinsing. Afterwards, I am putting Luster’s Pink in her hair and putting it up into 2 braids (which seems to be about all a 5 yr old can take for hair styling time). I’m noticing that, while her hair in the braids is moisturized for the entire week, the hair that is NOT in the braids (the fly-aways that sitck up on the front and around the back) is so dry and crackly that I don’t know what to do. I add moisturize those fly aways by putting water in every morning to at least get them to lay down and then every other day I take her hair down and put in more of the Pink. Your mom suggested coconut oil or “sheen” but, being new to this, when I went to the store there were about 50bajillion things called “coconut oil” and “sheen.” Can you help me figure this out? I want her hair to be healthy and nourished without traumatizing her from too much product. And she will NOT sleep with a silk scarf on, although I’ve tried. Thanks so much! ~Crystal from VA

sounds like you should try moisturizing and sealing her edges or even all of her hair. you could either spray a little water or moisturizing cream like Pink’s and then seal it in with something heavier like an oil or butter. or you could use the l.o.c. method that I have recently begun to use and i am loving the results. use a liquid like a water spritz or water-based spritz, then an oil of your choice ( i use olive, coconut, or jojoba and love them), and then seal it all in with a cream like Pinks or shea moisture curl style milk. if her hair is more fine, then stick to lighter oils like jojoba.

also using a sating pillow would help with the nighttime. and if the hair is still getting dry how about cornrowing the front of her hair into a cute headband and bunning up the rest so that its all in a protective style so that everything statys moisturized
