The Natural Hair Journey Can Get A Bit Kinky.

Hey, you. Fly Natural Hair Diva. Yes, you. Come here.
Recently, I’ve been hearing fleeting comments about some natural-haired ladies not feeling confident . I just wanted to check in with you and make sure that you weren’t second guessing YOURself. I’m not going to sell you a dream in a handbasket and promise that this natural hair thing is an easy transition for everybody. Some ladies hit more rough patches than others. I know women who were instantly in love with their curls and coils and then there were those who had to grow into their new look.
One misconception about women who have been natural for a while is…they have always been confident about their hair. Not all of us can say that’s true. It’s learned behavior. Just like you learn how to find products that work for your hair or how to detangle properly, many kinky gals had to learn how to love and feel confident about their natural hair.
So…You’ve got your regimen down. You know how to make a few cute hairstyles happen. Now, a short lesson on how to feel like the fierce goddess that you are.
1. Remember: Your hair. Your decision.
Unless someone is helping you get a piece of lint out of your hair or letting you know a piece of hair is sticking up, their feedback is not needed. If someone says something negative about your hair, say you appreciate them sharing their opinion and keep it moving. Do not allow other people to shape how you feel about yourself.
2. Focus on you.
Yes. I know you noticed that lovely diva over there, but you can’t let her fierceness shrink your confidence. If anything, pull from her energy. Mimic her aura and make it your own. Stop comparing yourself to others. Embrace YOUR hair. It’s yours. Love it.
3. Fake it ‘till you make it.
Feeling a little self-conscious? That’s normal. Shake it off and strut it out! Soon flaunting what ya got won’t take a conscious effort—it’ll be a habit!
4. Spice it up!
Sometimes you need a little remix in your daily routine. Tired of the same ol’ same ol’ thing? A hot new ‘do is always good for a girl’s self-confidence (and I’m sure the lovely ladies of The Damn Salon can make that happen for you *wink*).
5. Compliment yourself.
I saw you check your reflection in that store front window. Mhm. It’s ok to just stop and look at yourself sometimes and say, “Damn, I look good!” Why? Because you do. Duh. Don’t wait for others to validate you.
Alright. I see you glowing with a little more confidence now than when I first approached you. I’m glad this little pep talk is hitting home. You’re beautiful, love. You’re hot. You’re sexy. You’re fierce. Don’t you forget it.
I know you need to get back to what you were doing, though, but I’m glad we had this chat before you ran off.
