I noticed that sometimes weaves get a bad rep in the natural hair streets. I have nothing against wearing weaves as protective styles and in fact, I have trying one out on my list of things to do.

There are so many myths about weaves–that your hair will fall out or that you won’t have edges and more. Yes, without the proper care, these things can happen. But I wanted to put some spotlight on a fellow kinky girl who maintains lovely hair underneath her weaves.

Meet Joeline!

PinkDiva

Name: Joeline Bennett

Age: 24

What do you do? Model, Photography, Owner of #TeamPretty.

How long have you been natural? I’ve been natural for about 12-13 years.

Did you ever have a relaxer? Did you Big Chop or transition?
I had my 1st relaxer very young. My mom put “Just For Me” in my hair. My hair broke off really bad. When I got into middle school, I wanted a relaxer so badly so I begged my mother for one. She gave in and put it in my hair and eventually with not taking care of my hair, it broke off again. That was the last time I had put a relaxer in my hair. I normally wore braids or weaves so the relaxer just went away naturally between new growth and clipping my ends over the years.HairGrowth

Why did you decide to go natural?
I never really made a conscious decision to actually go natural but the older I got I did make the conscious decision to STAY natural. I would say probably after high school.

Biggest obstacle/challenge with your hair?
This passing year 2012 I’ve actually decided to study our type of hair and figure out what I could do to get the optimum growth & health for my hair. So its been challenging to figure out what works best and the do’s and dont’s.

Favorite thing about your hair?
I love my natural hair texture for me–it’s very manageable. I like that I can choose to wear it Curly or Straight. I love its versatility.

I’ve seen you joke on Twitter before about being the Weave Queen. How often do you wear a weave? I probably wear weaves a majority of the time. Weaves help you change your look and can change with your mood–if you want to go short, you can go short and if you want to go long, you can go long. Also, it helps me protect my hair. I am in the process of growing my hair to a certain length and it’s making it easy for me between weaves and half wigs.

What are your favorite styles to wear? My favorite style would probably be just a pretty long length with a nice amount of body and wave to it. Thats my go to style lol

Do you have any favorite hair brands/vendors? I actually don’t have a favorite. I use many different products from a wide variety of brands.

Are there any products that help you maintain the health of your hair while it is covered? What has seemed to work for me was putting in my leave in conditioner mix prior to getting my weave installed. This way my hair is filled with a lot of moisture and it stays healthy.HairCheck

What are some advantages to wearing weaves? Disadvantages? Advantages would be your hair is being protected and not being bothered. You are still able to wash your scalp and do everything that needs to be done. Disadvantages? I would say you just don’t get to enjoy your natural hair. Sometimes you can miss your hair when it’s braided up under a weave. You don’t get to test out any new products.CUTIE

Do you feel like wearing weaves is less or more work than wearing your hair out? Wearing a weave is definitely less work. There’s nothing to it when it comes to a weave lol. Its simple. For my hair I have to either flat iron it or twist it up and figure it out every day when I have it out.

Hair Idol? I Loveee KimmayTube’s Hair
Hair goals? My hair goal is to achieve waist length hair. Just to say I did it lol

Share some hair inspiration: No matter how long short or texture type, the main goal should be to achieve healthy hair!!! So work from the inside out–eating right ,exercising and taking care of yourself. Work whatever you have and stay on top of all the goals you set out for yourself xoxo!!!
